Indigestion is caused by multiple conditions in the digestive tract, including GERD, cancer and poor eating habits. Limiting high-fat foods and consuming high-fiber foods helps maintain a healthy digestive tract.

The link between nutrition and indigestion

The digestive system breaks down foods and liquids into their smallest chemical components called nutrients. Our bodies absorb these nutrients and use them for energy or to build and repair cells. Follow these steps to avoid indigestion and bloating:

  • Eat lots of fiber. A high-fiber diet helps move food through the digestive tract, making constipation less likely. Fiber also promotes weight loss. It’s important to consume both soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber serves as a food for the probiotics, or good bacteria, in our intestines. Insoluble fiber can’t be digested, so goes right through our digestive system and keeps intestinal contents moving along.
  • Limit fast and high-fat foods. Both slow digestion and cause indigestion and bloating.
  • Keep to a schedule. Eating meals and snacks at the same times each day keeps the digestive system in synch and helps avoid indigestion.
  • Stay hydrated. Water helps dissolve foods, allowing easier passage through the GI tract.
